[!] askbox/submission is open!

The askbox/submission will be closed after we reach 300 confessions/opinions, so send them in quickly! Remember to make sure your opinion doesn’t break any of our rules! Any confessions/opinions sent through fan mail will be deleted.

***IMPORTANT:  If you want to submit a post about the ongoing Burning Sun scandal and related events, please look very carefully at our rules, especially regarding scandalous/sensitive topics and guilty/not guilty type opinions. While we want to allow discussions about these events, we’re also avoiding adding fuel to the fire or contributing to the constant media storm. We will be reviewing each incoming post about this situation on a case by case basis, but here are some examples of what we most likely won’t accept:

  • Guilty accusations with no evidence OR unconfirmed evidence / If I can’t find a confirmed source to back up your statement, I won’t post it.
  • Speculation about idols or celebrities who do not have any confirmed connection to the scandal OR have been cleared of the situation (so far) / For example, “I think _______ is one of the celebrities that was in the chatroom”  or “I think ________ definitely did _______ even if the police decided not to investigate him.”
  • Grand sweeping statements / For example, “All men in K-pop are scum” or “The entire K-pop industry is corrupt.”
  • Opinions that expand the situation beyond K-pop / We are a K-pop blog, not a news blog/history blog/information about South Korea blog.  There is plenty to talk about this scandal that’s still in the K-pop sphere, so we don’t need to expand here.

If you do not want to see posts or opinions about this scandal, please blacklist our tag #UKO Burning Sun.

[!] heads up! the askbox/submission will be open in 24 hours! (+ other things)

Hi all, it’s Katherine! It took a little longer than I expected, but I’m finally ready to come off hiatus – which means that AL, Alice, and Annie will be back soon to post regularly as well! I’m sorry things have been slower for a while, but we’re hoping to get things back on schedule soon.

First things first – the ask box/submission will be open on:

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 10th

@ 11 PM KST

@ 10 AM EST

@ 7 AM PST

@ 2 PM UTC

I’ve decided to add in KST because, you know, that’s where I live now haha. I’m very sorry to all my fellow Americans for the extremely early timing; I promise that the next time I open, I’ll schedule it for a weekend when it will be okay for me to stay up a bit later! (But this weekend I’m going to D&E’s concert sooooo…)

Now for an update… you all probably remember when Jimin posted a notice last month about the Burning Sun scandal and how we decided to handle it. Since the ask box is opening for the first time in a while, I’d like to remind everyone to please look very carefully at our submission rules, especially regarding scandalous/sensitive topics and guilty/not guilty type opinions. We understand that you all will have a lot to say about this whole situation, but we need some boundaries because so much information is still coming out every day and things are still changing super quickly.

To be honest, we’re probably going to have to look at each submission about this topic on a case by case basis. That being said, we will not choose or reject opinions through personal preference! We want to allow discussions about these events, but we also don’t want to add fuel to the fire or contribute to the constant media storm. Our policy might change as more information is released, but we’re trying to work based on what we know right now.

Here are some examples of things we most likely won’t accept (and comments we will probably give warnings to). They’re not necessarily the only things we will reject, but this should give a clearer idea of what we’re trying to avoid:

  1. Guilty accusations with no evidence OR unconfirmed evidence / If I can’t find a confirmed source to back up your statement, I won’t post it.
  2. Speculation about idols or celebrities who do not have any confirmed connection to the scandal OR have been cleared of the situation (so far) / For example, “I think _______ is one of the celebrities that was in the chatroom”  or “I think ________ definitely did _______ even if the police decided not to investigate him.”
  3. Grand sweeping statements / For example, “All men in K-pop are scum” or “The entire K-pop industry is corrupt.”
  4. Opinions that expand the situation beyond K-pop / We are a K-pop blog, not a news blog/history blog/information about South Korea blog.  There is plenty to talk about this scandal that’s still in the K-pop sphere, so we don’t need to expand here.

Also – if you do not want to see posts or opinions about this scandal, please blacklist our tag #UKO Burning Sun.

Thank you all so much for being patient with us as always – it really means a lot to us!

[!] follow-up notice

Hi everyone, about a week ago we posted a notice explaining what we were going to do with posts/comments about the case involving Burning Sun/hidden cameras/corruption/etc. We received great feedback from you all, and to that we’re very thankful.

The things we said in that first post still hold, but we’re adding in a few things. First, we understand the topics involved in this case are very heavy and triggering for many people. I wouldn’t want anyone to see an opinion and be reminded of bad memories. Before anything, I can assure you all that we will never, ever post anything with graphic details – never have, never will. But we understand these topics can still be triggering even if it’s not explicitly mentioned in the post.

Therefore, any post that is about the criminal case, whether about a perpetrator or anything about it in general, will be tagged with #UKO Burning Sun. (Those posts will still have regular appropriate tags, by the way.) If you would like to avoid posts about the case, please whitelist the tag (click here if you don’t know how to do so). We’ll remind everyone on every post that’s tagged #UKO Burning Sun that the tag can be whitelisted and those posts can be avoided.

Thank you all again for your patience.

[!] notice

Hi all, at this point, all of you have probably heard the news about Seungri and the other artists who have been caught in this huge crime case. The nature of these charges are very serious, so we are trying our best to still post opinions but refrain from spreading misinformation. And this is indeed difficult with the rate at which new information is coming in. I’ve had to alter this post a few times because new information keeps coming in. We’re a K-pop opinion blog, not a news blog. I realize some people do use this blog to stay updated on the K-pop world, so we’re trying our best not to spread misinformation. This applies to the comments too: please refrain from spreading any information you are not 100% sure is true. If I see anything not backed up, I’ll put a public warning that the information is not confirmed.

This update is also a reminder of our rule of “no guilty/not guilty opinions.” Unless that person has admitted so himself/herself or has been officially charged, do not send in an opinion claiming someone’s innocence or guilt, even if you believe the information you’re telling us is correct. I assure you it won’t be posted. I’ll also remind you all just in case that we are not a blog about the country of South Korea, meaning we don’t post things detailing the history of South Korea or how the current government works or etc. The main focus should be about K-pop, not the South Korea.

We received a few opinions about Seungri’s involvement last opening (since then, more K-pop artists have been caught to be part of this ring, and there is information in general). Some of the opinions are fine to be posted, but there are a handful that either use outdated information/misinformation and/or break the rule mentioned before. I will not be grandfathering those opinions. However, posts about Seungri or this situation that have already been made will stay up.

I do apologize for posting this notice so inconveniently, after the opening. At the time, I did not think it would blow up to the extent it did. I’m sure you all have a lot to say about this whole ordeal, and I and many others would love to hear those opinions, but integrity is very important to us, especially when this case is such a big deal right now in South Korea. Thank you all for understanding.

[!] happy new year! + 2018 wrap up

Hello everyone and Happy New Year! The admin team hopes you all are starting this new year off right with good company and good food. The last year really just flew by, didn’t it?

Every year, we like to look back on what happened the past year and recap a little. In 2018, lots of things happened! For one, we finally got a new main admin to aid poor withering me. Katherine has been so, so helpful and essential to this blog. We had so many issues over rules and technical stuff; honestly, if it were still me only as the main admin, I think I’d actually lose my mind. But I’m so lucky to have an amazing co-main admin with me. And I can see how the feedback we get has changed since Katherine has stepped up.

We also had two hirings! The one in July was the first hiring I was in charge of, so needless to say, I was extremely nervous. But despite my incompetence, we were able to get, in total this year, six admins this year! Though some have left us, it was definitely for the better, and they’re doing amazing things now. I’m honestly so proud of the admins. It’s really easy to get busy and stop making posts; we understand life happens. But the admins have been so consistent in uploading; it’s amazing, really. I couldn’t ask for a better team, and I can’t wait to march forward with this team.

Our poor blog also got a bit of an update! We updated our rules to fit the now and also created rules for the comment section. And after noticing a lot of asks repeating the same question of “how do I send in something?,” we added a tutorial section and updated the FAQ section. The graphics for this blog have also changed, like our staff page! It was kind of bittersweet changing things because I definitely wanted to respect the old admins’ work, but some things definitely needed updating. We’re already working on another project regarding our page, so stay tuned for that!

So uh… this is the part where I present to you all our top post of the year. Well, the “gadget” that I use for this doesn’t work anymore. Therefore, not only can I not give you all 2018′s top UKO post, I won’t be able to post any more top posts until I can find something that’ll do what the old tool I used did. Instead, let us know what your favorite post this year has been! Whether it’s goofy or a post you agree 100000% with, let us know!

To wrap things up, this year, I asked the other admins to say a few words about the year. Here’s what they said!

Ellie (big-kitties): I have had a lot of fun over the past month taking part in creating posts for this blog. I was actually really excited when recruitment was announced back at the beginning of November because I had always wanted to do something more for the K-pop community. I have been able to broaden my Photoshop skills, having originally only used it for photography, and learn a bit about graphics. My favourite part of making the opinions is trying to find the right picture to use. I have enjoyed my time taking part in UKO and look forward to continuing to contribute for the next year.

AL (al208):I still cannot believe 2018 is almost over. Looking back now, joining this blog is one of the best decisions I made this year, and I really want to thank our main admins for letting me be a part of this community. I am happy with the work I do on this blog, and I love how the blog brings me closer to K-pop every day. I look forward to seeing and hearing about more unpopular K-pop opinions next year.

Alice (macaron-coups127): Hey all! Hasn’t been that long since I joined the blog with these fabulous admins, but just wanted to say thanks for a crazy, wild, and of course, definitely entertaining, 2018! I’m still getting the hang of editing these photos, but thanks to our lovely main admins, I think I’m getting better. I’m hoping to see a lot more of you in 2019, and want to thank you all for stopping by to read, comment, and submit your opinions. Happy New Year!

Kayla (kyung-mp3): It’s been amazing as an admin so far! The other admins have been so sweet and welcoming to us new additions. And of course all the followers have been welcoming as well! It’s so interesting to see everyone’s opinions and it helps give a better insight as to what is going on in k-pop currently. I love seeing what everyone has to say! ^^ Thank you all for your kindness~~ and let’s all have a wonderful 2019!

Annie (iwantthatkpopbody): I’ve loved this blog and it’s content ever since I discovered it, and am honestly so honoured to be an admin. It’s so interesting to see the unpopular opinions of the K-pop fandom, and it is always fun to create edits of them (even when I don’t necessarily agree, haha). I hope that we have, and will continue to, bring quality content to our audience and grow as a platform for anyone to share their opinions! 2018 has been amazing, and I’m hoping that 2019 will be even better (and bring lots of new opinions!!!).

Katherine (katherinedoeskpop): Wow, it’s been such a wild year!  In some ways, this blog has been one of the most constant parts of my life, and I’m so happy and honored to be here. First of all, I’d like to thank Jimin for promoting me to main admin and for always having my back – I couldn’t ask for a better partner!  I’m also really grateful to AL, Annie, Alice, Ellie, and Kayla for joining us and being part of our little admin family. It’s been really great having them with us, and I’m so glad to be getting to know them.  And last but not least, I am very thankful for all our followers who have stayed with us through all of this year’s craziness. You’ve been so patient as I’m learning and growing, and I will always remember the kind and supportive messages I received even when I made mistakes. I will continue to do my best to be a main admin that you all deserve. I hope that 2019 will bring us amazing things for K-pop, and I also wish that each and every one of you has a fantastic year <3

Last but not least, thank you all so much for supporting the blog. It’s been a crazy year, with lots of frustration but also excitement and joy. We love seeing all the discussion go on, both the agreements and disagreements. There were a lot of changes made, and like a certain staff (cough), we could have definitely done better easing you all in and communicating. But so many of you were so supportive and understanding; it really warms my heart. It’s now been five years since I’ve been on this blog; I’ve seen a lot go down on this blog, but I can definitely say this has been my favorite year for this blog, for many reasons!

We have lots already planned for you all for 2019. And despite our shortcomings, we hope you all come along with us on this journey.

Love, the unpopularkpop-opinions team
